HALLMAN, Marjorie Ermina
HALLMAN, Marjorie Ermina - 85, passed away peacefully in Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou, on April 15, 2007.
Born Marjorie Ermina Banks in Waterville on May 16, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Henry Pineo Banks and Gyneth Ezelle Chute. She graduated from Kings County Academy, and later attended Acadia University.
She married the love of her life, Ward Shantz Hallman on August 15, 1945, and after several years in Kitchener, Ont., they returned to live in Nova Scotia in the Annapolis Valley. They moved to Pictou County in 1960, settling in Pictou in 1971.
She was involved in local, provincial and federal levels of the Home and School Association and served as president of the Nova Scotia Home and School for two years and was a member of the Board of Canadian Home and School and Parent-Teacher Association for eight years.
She was a member of the "Committee of Nine" responsible for Atlantic Ashrams and was vice-president of the New Glasgow Council of Women.
In 1968 she produced and moderated a community radio program centering on trends and problems in education.
She returned to Teacher's College and graduated on the Dean's List in 1971, subsequently teaching English in New Glasgow for 12 years.
She was also a member of the Publicity Committee of the United Church Camp Association and served as vice-president.
She bred and showed cocker spaniels for a number of years and later avidly took up doll making. She was a tremendous cook and seamstress, and enjoyed entertaining and traveling.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Marjorie was predeceased by her loving husband, Ward S. Hallman, as well as her brothers, John and Gordon Banks (Waterville).
She is survived by her children, Brian Hallman, Lower Burlington; Rev. Doug Hallman, Hamilton, Ont.; Cheryl (Hallman) Waal, Port Charlotte, Fla.; Shelley Hallman, Amherst; foster daughter, Margie Albright, Trenton, Ont.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday, April 22, in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Monday in Pictou United Church, Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity officiating. Donations in her memory may be made to the Pictou Library, Water Street, Pictou, NS B0K 1H0 or to the Recreation Department of Maritime Oddfellows Home, Box 850, Pictou, NS B0K 1H0.
