MacDONALD, Rev. Peter Stuart
MacDONALD, Rev. Peter Stuart - 91, Halifax, died on August 19, 2007.
He was born in Green Hill, Pictou Co., on November 2, 1915, a son of the late George D. and Estella (Harris) MacDonald.
A graduate of Dalhousie University and Pine Hill Divinity Hall, he was ordained by the Maritime Conference of the United Church of Canada on June 12, 1938. In 1954 he completed a M.A. at the Kennedy School of Missions in Hartford, Conn.
With his wife, Edna Jean (Lesbirel), he served churches in the Maritime Conference, including Bermuda. He served as a chaplain in the Canadian Army from 1943 to 1946. With his wife, Edna, he served as a missionary with the Malwa Church Council in Central India from 1947 to 1959. He was variously Chair and Secretary of several Presbyteries. In 1976-77 he was President of the Maritime Conference of the United Church. On three occasions he was a Commissioner to the General Council, and served on various General Council Boards and Committees.
He was active in many different community and other organizations and was made a life member of the Nova Scotia Branch of the Bible Society.
He is survived by daughter, Rev. R. Marilyn (Leigh Sanford) MacDonald, Milford; sons, Canon Eric S. (Elizabeth, deceased), Windsor; Dr. Bruce F. (Olive), Regina; Ian S. (Linda), Halifax; grandchildren, Alexander, Kirsten, David (Dana), Rachel, Matthew (Shannon) and Aaron, and by great-grandson, Gulliver. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Edna Jean; sister, Georgina, and brothers, Alvin, Fraser, Clarke and Edward (in infancy).
The family would like to thank the staff of 9Lane and 4A TCU for their kind and loving care given to our father/grandfather over the past months.
Cremation has taken place. The family will meet relatives and friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, in the Narthex of Bedford United Church. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 23, at 9:30 a.m. in Bedford United Church, with a reception to follow in the Narthex. Ashes will be interred in the family lot in Durham Cemetery, Pictou County, at 3 p.m. the same day, followed by a reception in Green Hill Alma United Church Hall. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to the United Church Mission and Service Fund or to a charity of your choice.
