A busy day at Pictou United

by Angie Burrell

It was a busy day at Pictou United: Christian Family – Pentecost Sunday, Mother’s Day and Rev. Moriarity’s last Sunday as she starts her three month sabbatical.

Greeting the congregation were Harris and Gayle MacKenzie. Steward was Brian Burris.

As worship began Rev. Moriarity reminded us of the plight of the people of Myanmar and how the United Church is currently exploring emergency response options with Canadian sister churches, ACT International and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

As we are gathered by God’s Spirit and gave thanks for Joy, Truth, Life, Hope, Love, Wisdom, Peace and God’s spirit in and around us, wind sounds were made and streamers were waved.

The New Testament Lesson was a dramatic reading based on Acts 2 – The day of Pentecost with Donna Weaver, John Spyder MacDonald, Michael Simmons and Beth MacDonald participating in the reading along with Rev. Moriarity.

Story Time was “God in Between” where a small town discovers that God is with us wherever we are.

The Ministry of Music offered by the choir was “We’re the Image of God’s Smile”.

The congregation gathered at a table at the front of the church to give thanks and share in the bread and the wine with the Sunday School helping to set the table. Grace was said before and after the meal.

Brad MacCallum presented Rev. Moriarity with a bouquet of red roses and a card on behalf of the congregation with wishes for a restful and rejuvenating sabbatical.

The congregation gathered in the church hall for a potluck luncheon after worship.
