Lenten Journey at Pictou United
by Sharon Cheverie
Pictou- “Masks” were handed out as we gathered to celebrate the First Sunday in the season of Lent. The Greeters were Doris and Ken MacMillan, Steward was Ian MacDonald. This week’s bulletin was dedicated in memory of James McGaffin by Kathleen McGaffin.
Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity gave the Lenten Introit, explaining the significance of the color purple and of lent being a 40 day journey of faith, an interpretation of our faith with god and one another. Lighting of the Christ Candle was by Jim Parker and his daughter Amelia. Call to Worship was by Kenzie Macdonald and Jenna-Rose MacIsaac.
Signs with the word Hallelujah found in pews throughout the church were taken to the front and placed in a box where they will remain until Easter when it will again be o.k. to sing this word. Hebrew Scripture was read by Ruby and Lena Roberts.
Rev. Moriarty Explained the “mask” as being a symbol or way of hiding from god or one another. To think of things that we say or do that make us want to hide or that would make god sad. That this does not make us bad, but human and that we all make mistakes.
Congregation was invited to draw or write on their masks something we do that would make god sad. Reading the Gospel Lesson were Luke Young and Issac Young.
We are reminded God is with us! We are not alone! As we prepare to enter the Lenten Journey the congregation was invited to participate in 3 Lenten stations. 1. “Masks were torn up and placed in the garbage to let it go and to do thing that are pleasing to god. 2. Ashes and oil- ashes to remind us that we are all human; oil reminds us that we are all God’s holy people. 3. Bread- reminder to us of God’s love. God’s love must live within us as he calls us to share that love each and every day.
Lenten Journey Blessing was shared by Craig Sutherland and Robbie Falconer.
Following worship a Lenten Pancake Luncheon was hosted by the Worship and Finance and Stewardship Committees.

Transfiguration Sunday
by Sharon Cheverie
Pictou- Beautiful Mountain Images and Music were playing as we gathered for Transfiguration Sunday, Last Sunday in the Season of Epiphany. Greeting the congregation were Carolyn Moore and Linda Tucker, steward was Ian Macdonald.
The Ministry and Personnel Committee asked that the congregation take some time to reflect and respond to a questionnaire they handed out. As they seek guidance and direction in helping Pictou United flourish.
Call to worship was by Diane Vaughn. Reverend Mary-Beth Moriarty’s time with the children included a slide show of various mountains in the world and of their importance to some. How people climb mountains to feel close to or talk to god, as god is the creator of everything. The children were told of another way to feel close to god without going up a mountain was to just pray. The children closed their eyes for a prayer.
Hebrew Scripture Moses’ Holy Encounter and Gospel Lesson the Transfiguration were both read by Donna Weaver.
Reflections- Our Own” Encounters of the Holy Kind” by Reverend Moriarity showed more mountain slides and spoke of this being where heaven and earth meet. That to climb a mountain is a challenge, to move a mountain is impossible. And that there are many ways God meets us if we are open. She spoke of our own mountain top experiences when we then see life differently or experienced a deep change and how we have to move down the mountain to regain the breath of life As we move into the season of Lent a tome to listen, time for transformation.
Next Sunday marks the beginning of Lent our worship will be Intergenerational as we ponder the meaning and prepare ourselves for the journey ahead.
A reminder to committees that annual reports are due.
Our Annual Valentine Chocolate Event takes place Sat Feb 9th 6:00-8:00 in the church hall, all are welcome
