"EARTH DAY" - Think about it !!

Submitted by Sharon Cheverie

PICTOU - “Second Cup Sunday” was held prior to our regular morning service.

Marking Earth Day was Sunday’s theme.

Greeting the congregation were Mary-Lou MacDonald and Sharon Dewar, steward was Bill Dodson.

Lighting the Christ Candle and Call to Worship was by Isaac Young.

Rev. Mary –Beth Moriarity emptied a garbage bag and showed the children what she picked up while on a 5 minute walk around the church block. She explained how God gave us a beautiful place to live and we don’t do a very good job looking after it. We need more than one day for earth day, that everyday we should be thinking of ways to make our earth a cleaner, better place to live. Congregation sang with the children Like a Rock.

Hebrew Scripture Litany- God Makes a World was read by Seth Burrill and Jordan MacIsaac. Gospel Lesson John 14:15-21 was read by Rev. Moriarity.

Reflections “Called into Partnership” Rev Moriarity spoke of the partnership we have with God. That we have the knowledge, we know what we need to do to care for the earth. God depends on us individually and as a community to care for his creation. And she asked the question, why should we care about our carbon footprint?

"STONE ON STONE"

by Sharon Cheverie

Pictou - We gathered on Sunday, April 20th for the 5th Sunday in the Season of Easter.

Greeters were Judy Cormier and Sharon Cheverie, steward was Ian Macdonald.

Lighting The Christ Candle and Call to Worship was by Chloe Marshall.

Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity’s time with the children discussed their resemblance and their qualities; she asked who do you look like? What qualities of God live within us as God's image shines within us and God works in us?

New Testament Lesson - Stoning Stephen, was read by Art Macdonald. Gospel Lesson John 14:1-14 was read by Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity.

Reflections “stone on stone”, as the sound of two stones hitting together were heard, we listened to the words - throwing, hitting, breaking, destroying, accusations, anger, hatred, fear. Rev. Moriarity referred to the story of Stephen being stoned and how people watched and did or said nothing. And how, 2000 years later, stones are still being thrown, stones of fear, walls of division. Our world is not how God intended. We are living stones - people of God by our faithfulness and actions. We should not be afraid to speak, stand up, to reach out or to break down walls, stone by stone by stone by stone by stone.

Ministry of Music - the congregation enjoyed “Prayer of the Norwegian Child” as sung by the beautiful voice of Kenzie MacDonald.

Good Shepherd Sunday at Pictou United

by Sharon Cheverie

Pictou - Images and information about Habitat for Humanity were shown for a second Sunday at Pictou United; as we explore the possibility of participating in a “build” in March’09.

Greeters were Perley and Edera Charlton, steward was Bill Dodson.

Mission moment was shared by Margaret Anne Dodson who left for China Monday representing Maritime Conference for UCC on an exposure visit of Mission and Service. We wish her well on her journey.

Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity lit the The Christ Candle and did call to Worship.

Her time with the children consisted of a game of objects such as a helmet, toothpaste, band-aid, and umbrella and asked what these items had in common? They protect us, and asked the children to name other things that protect us. She shared that today was Good Shepherd Sunday and showed them a Shepherd’s hook; and explained that God is like a Shepherd and when times get rough or your feeling lonely to think about God as our Shepherd, he protects us with love.

Hebrew Scripture Psalm 23 - A Modern Translation and Gospel lesson Mark 6:30-34 were both read by Rev. Moriarty.

Reflections ‘Sabbath Time’ was a dialogue in the form of a skit presented by Randy Burrill and Bob Marshall. Explaining what exactly a clergy sabbatical is and the reasons one takes one. It is simply a time of resting, embracing, exploring and enjoying a time to disengage, reflect and travel.

Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarty prepares for a 3 month sabbatical in May.
