“Holy Call” to justice - a new prophet is calling

by Sharon Cheverie

Pictou- Greeting the congregation were Vee Reich and Seth Burrill, steward was Peter Fraser.

Ruth Mackay gave a report on the success of the “Can”struction Project.

Lighting the Christ Candle and Call to Worship were by Thea Waller.

Time with the children today had some discussion about the word, "STOP". Rev Mary-Beth Moriarity shared the story of Jesus coming across a group of fishermen and telling them they needed to stop what they were doing and follow him. That they now were going to “catch” people in the net of God’s love. In comparison with the church we “catch” people, bring them in and show them God’s love.

Hebrew Scripture 1 Samuel 3:1-20 and Gospel Lesson Mark 1:14-20 were read by Judy Cormier.

Reflections “Holy Call”
- Rev Moriarity spoke of the “Barack O’Mania” the past week. How the hopes and dreams of the world, the nation and the people were now on his shoulders. That some feel religion and politics don’t mix but that this is an ancient “Holy Call” for justice, liberation, wholeness, equality and life for all.

That this is not about him, it is about us. We are called to change lives. That “Yes We Can” is a biblical faith filled. That Barack has a strong sense of his own calling. How his own calling enables others to grasp their call, inspired by his words. How risking of one's self has it’s costs. Justice, liberation, wholeness, equality and life for all, these words of which good speeches are made, are also things that God’s holy people are made of.

Holy Call to justice in not always easy to hear or follow. As we felt the magnificence of this past week, 45 years after King’s “I have a dream” speech, a new prophet is calling.

A reminder that annual reports are due to the church office ASAP.

“Thank You God for Making Me, Me”

by Sharon Cheverie

Pictou- Greeting the congregation were Gayle and Harris MacKenzie, steward was Peter Fraser.

Lighting the Christ Candle and call to worship was read by Emily Cyr.

Rev. Mary-Beth Moriarity reminded the congregation that this week is the week of prayer sponsored by the Pictou Town Ministerial and celebrated with a daily payer service each day at 12:15 PM in one of the town churches.

Time with the children today was spent talking about how each and every one of us is unique. Our bodies are amazing, and different. No two are the same. That difference is good and wonderful. She asked the children to thank God for making me, me. She then had them wrap their arms around themselves to give themselves a hug and to remember God is in us. The congregation joined the children in singing “Like a Rock” Rev.

Moriarity extended an “Invitation to Listen” to think about who you are and whose you are as she did the readings “we are Holy…Wholly Loved”, “Here and There, Always and Everywhere” a paraphrase of Psalm 139, Hebrew Scripture Psalm 139 Known by God, “Thank You for Making Me, Me” a paraphrase of Psalm 139 and A Wisdom Story “God’s Fingerprints”.

She asked all of us to remember we are beautiful, important and loved.

Ministry of Music “Creator God You Gave Us Light” was offered by the choir.

Epiphany Sunday at Pictou United

by Sharon Cheverie

Pictou- We gathered Jan 4th for Epiphany Sunday. Greeting was Donna Weaver, steward was Peter Fraser.

Lighting the Advent Candles and Christ Candle was Tiena Buckley.

Call to Worship was read by Tiena Buckley and Brennan Marks.

Time with the children, Rev Mary-Beth Moriarity explained the word epiphany, a Greek word meaning surprise. She explained that Christmas was a season of 12 days from Dec 25th to Jan 6th and that we celebrate God’s love for 12 days and that this is the best gift we can give each other.

She spoke of the star on the top of a tree at Christmas that reminds us of the journey of the wise men. A Christmas cracker was opened to reveal a crown which symbolizes the wise men, a surprise and a note. The children were given a bag of crackers to open for their epiphany party downstairs. Before leaving they sang “Follow the Star” with the congregation.

June Cameron read the Hebrew Scripture Isaiah 60: 1-6 and the Gospel Lesson Mathew 2:1-12.
Rev Moriarity asked “Now what will you do”? We have been gifted, now what will you do with the love God has given to you, with the hope God has put under your tree, with the joy you didn’t expect, with the grace God put in your stocking, grace God has given to us in the Babe, now that Christmas is over what will you do?

Ministry of Music “The Hallelujah Song” was offered by John Spyder MacDonald.

Rev. Moriarity extinguished the Advent Candles on by one leaving the Christ Candle lit, to be lit each time we gather.
